About Our School

We are a non-profit corporation founded in 1968 in Anchorage by local karate
master Yurio Nakada (7th Dan) of Naha, Okinawa. We were Alaska’s first karate
school.

We are a fully accredited affilliate branch of the Sohonbu headquarters in Okinawa,
Japan. Unlike many schools in the United States, karate rank earned in our school is
recognized worldwide.

Our traditional karate style is Okinawa Goju-Ryu, which is the original Chojun Miyagi
sensei system known the world over. The popular “karate kid” movies depicted our
peace loving but effective style. Goju-Ryu means half-hard or hard-soft way.

The staff is strictly volunteer receiving no payment for their efforts. We do not teach
for the money. We teach for the love of our karate style and to promote its virtues.
Our local instructors average 22-35 years in the school and all started as white belt
beginners with us.
