The style emphasizes non-violent behavior with a self-defense only approach. Students are forbidden to use their attained skills outside of the school except in the most dire self-defense circumstances. Emphasis is placed on conflict avoidance. The Goju-Ryu student walks quietly and confidently through life.
The Goju-Ryu system has its roots in China’s northern Shaolin temples in the 13th century where the monks practiced kung fu as a way of life and survival. Kanryo Higashionna, the founder, spent 26 years training in China in the mid 1800’s before settling in Naha, Okinawa.
Higashionna’s star pupil Chojun Miyagi spent his entire life refining the system into what he named Goju-Ryu or hard-soft style. Miyagi sensei combined the hard white crane kung fu methods of northern China with the soft southern systems to make a unique and diverse self-defense system practiced today the world over.
Goju-Ryu karate is characterized by swift evasive maneuvers with hard decisive responses. The traditional weapons of the system, once farm tools, are taught in this school with historical and modern usage applications.
The system mandates using only that force necessary to neutralize an attacker with the least resulting injury. Walking away without physical confrontation is the doctrine taught in the school.
The Miyagi system is considered the original karate system in Okinawa that all other systems originated from. It demands respect, obedience and dedication from its practitioners.
A strong commitment to traditional training methods is adhered to. The program emphasizes personal achievement inside an umbrella of humility. The Goju-Ryu student is both strong and restrained. This approach helps to develop character and confidence in all aspects of modern life.
