All students of Goju-Ryu worldwide
are required to learn the twelve kata
or forms of the style. They are the
backbone of the style that contain
many defensive and offensive
techniques. Kata is essential for self
practice and character building. They
are required for all promotion tests
from early white belt to the highest
black belt levels. Kata allows a
student to achieve self defense
reality at accelerated levels limited
only by his or her imagination and
physical ability.
A perfect karate exercise and tool
that doubles as a filter and test for
insincere practitioners or those only
interested in learning how to fight.

All students learn the basics
using the Japanese names.
The basics make up the style
with all future training
referring back to the basics
as a solid foundation to build
upon.
The basics are the same in
Goju-Ryu karate worldwide.
They are used in most other
traditional karate schools as
well. The stances are used in
offensive and defensive
actions using hand blocks
and punches with kicking
techniques.
Practitioners with strong
basics nearly always excel in
the style.
There are many other
stances, blocks and strikes
taught in the school. The
examples shown here are
those taught to new students.
